New Year's Resolutions

At this time of year when people are thinking about what they will do differently in the coming year, here are some resolutions made by Jonathan Edwards in 1722 & 1723. Edwards resolved to read these every week to help keep his mind on the things of God and his life on track.

These are available several places on the web, I found this particular list at the Center for Reformed Theology & Apologetics website.

May God bless you as you enter the New Year!

Interesting I could not even read through all of them now. He read them weekly? Impressive. We could all learn a lesson from this.

This is my first visit to your blog. I am a reformed Presbyterian. I am sure we have many things in common. I
attended a reformed Baptist church for about a year.

Hi Tracy!

Thanks for stopping by. I agree, this is quite a list and to review it every week shows a great desire to honor God in my opinion. I wish I could be so dedicated!

It is that time of year for resolutions and Jonathan Edwards' resolutions are the best Christian resolutions I have seen to date. It would do us all good to read over them once a week, but much more than reading over them we should unpack them and really understand what he meant. We should try to internalize his Godly thoughts and apply them to ourselves. The remarkable thing is he wrote them during the years of 1722 and 1723. That would have put him at 20 years old when he completed them. I do not know how old you are, but I know when I was twenty I was not having too many Godly thoughts. He was a little over 54 years old when he died. It is amazing how much our forefathers did in so little time. Christians will forever be indebted to Godly men and women like Edwards. Hopefully, with God's help, individuals of this generation will step to the forefront and carry the torch of Biblical Christianity, shining brightly, to the next generation.

I agree RC. I'm shamed many times as I read of the walk the Puritans had. They were truly men of God who had turned their back on the world and were pressing hard toward the goal. Would that we could have another generation like them, as you say.
